Native Americans have been heavily influenced by the outside world ever since coming into contact with the Europeans. One aspect of this influence has been a change in traditional diets. The new diet has not agreed well with the Native Americans and has resulted in diabetes, cancer, kidney failure, obesity, and drug addictions. The ‘Western’ diet of over-processed and packaged food are still relatively new to the Native Americans and their bodies struggling in breaking down these unhealthy foods. Flowering Tree Permaculture has attempted to address some of these health issues by gathering a group of Native volunteers to eat only their native foods for a period of time. While monitoring their health conditions it was clear that overall health was significantly improved.
